81 Mack 686, front drive  rear end is making a random popping noise while driving, I'm guessing it's the power divider, has the auto one, but it's also puking oil out the breather? I don't know what would make it do that. Oil looks good in it, nothing out of the ordinary. Anything else it could be? I'd rather just pull the power divider than the whole carrier but I'm tempted to pull it all just to check it out. Any advice is appreciated

Where are you filling the rearend with oil ? And auto power divider peanuts will chatter, i bet there a 2 grooves ground into the outer cam drum in the power divider..

It can be, as far as oil level, pull the rear plug in the banjo housing and see if oil drains out.  You may need to pull the side cover to inspect the top reduction..

it is strange,  I assume the breather was flushed out with brake clean and re-installed..  and you dont have leaking wheel seals? is the top of the breather missing?  that will allow oil to splash out, I guess..  odd.... does that rear get really hot during the work day?

A few things to check before pulling it all apart

Are tyres all the same size, not just the same number, get a tape and measure them

On Mack bogies this is important as the power divider isnt a true power divider

If the tyres are different in sizes you can here the tyres chirp when running empty

where you able to replace the outer cam drum? and able to get the 1500 ftlbs of torque on it? just curious how you got it done..  I assume you have the cam drum holding tool..

I may be seen out of the line by the crowd but I don't see really crytical wear on both outer and inner cams. It's there for sure but I'd estimate the condition of the parts as 4 of 5.

Yes Vlad, however if you ad up the weaon the cams and the peanuts, which im sure are ground down,  popping noises are possible..  i never liked these auto power dividers anyway..

yup spiders and a lock out are more sensible! More for giving when you got miss matched tires!

what's it look like ?? 50 yrs later no Body tells me nothin till now!!  install the drum/nut then air gun the sh- t outta it. never cared for the "auto" dividers . then again never cared for auto transmissions in big trucks with exceptions "sanitation removal units /fire dept  etc )
