Ya, yours was fuel injected. His had a 1 bbl carb.   We bought a new 95 f250 here at work.  300/5 spd.  It ran well.

The F250 (or even rarer 350) with the 300 ZF5 speed was a great combo. Most of the 300s in lighter trucks had that Mazda 5 speed car transmission that didn't hold up very well and is terrible to rebuild. The ZF5 is a bit loud and the synchros in 4th go bad but I've never seen one fail in a stock tuned gas truck.

We got good service from the truck.  Yes, it had Zf5, as I put a clutch in it once all by myself.  Ugh.  Wrestling that big bastard around on a floor jack was not fun.  Of course being a shop truck it just got beat to death by the time I sold it.

I converted my 89f150 from AOd to the Mazda 5 spd.  I hated that Aod.  The bad thing with Mr5od was if you rested your hand on the shifter it would eat the shift forks.  They were only aluminum and with only auto transmission fluid it did not take that kind of wear very well.  The box I bought used was eaten up on 3-4 fork.  I went through it and it worked good for the time I had it.

I didn't know that's how those Mazda boxes failed. Every auction Ford pickup with that Mazda 5 speed always seems to have a blown transmission, I just assumed it was from "farmer abuse"

I did a slave cylinder on my 91 Ford with the ZF and it wasn't too bad getting it in and out, but it was 2WD. The 4WD NV4500 I did not to long ago was terrible and I hope I don't have to do another one of those again. It was 100+ pounds heavier than the ZF and it was in my driveway in winter.

I had similar experience with Mazda 5 spd.  I beleive it was an M5R2... The F-150 i was working on lost 5th.  After 2 salvage yard trannys with the same issue,  Ijust took the trannys back, and brought my tools with me. They let me pull the top covers off all the Mazda trannys they had...  When i was done, i left with no tranny and a refund, and they said those trannys were going to the scrap pile.. i never did finish the job, the owner threw in the towel..

They weren't overly strong and they tended to loose the rubber plugs up top for the shift rails, loose fluid over time and then it would eat itself.  The shift forks were just another issue.  They were not much different then the T5 that was in the mustangs.  Just a bit easier to disassemble/assemble.  I can do a toploader blindfolded but they just have a different sequence with all the tapered bearings.

IDK, I had over 200K on mine in a Ford Exploder, pulled trailers no problem, but then again it was on the original clutch as well. Had to come out one time when a mouse nest was in the pressure plate/bell housing.

Never dumped the oil in it either. (5 spd).

If it's any consolation, Mazda gearboxes have been crap since they first arrived in this wide brown land

Even today they still don't have their shit sorted

Dunno how to put it politely, Mazda make shit transmissions, rest of the car/SUV/ute is fine
