Why would the federal government meddle in sheep fencing, presumably on private land, in Boyertown, PA? Was this part of the $5,000,000 earmarked for the American Lamb Board for "Measuring the Climate Benefits and Emissions of Prescribed Sheep Grazing"?

Are you suggesting that without federal farm subsidies we will not be able to get food?

The program is to fence off streams to keep livestock out of them.  This allows vegetation to grow alone the stream.  The vegetation decreases run off thus decreasing flooding and sedimentation.  The decreased sediment increases oxygen carrying capacity of the water making the streams healthier for fish.  Tree growth over the stream decreases water temperatures which provides better habitat for sport fish like trout.  This supplements the fishing industry.  It is not a simple one for one proposition.

As I mentioned, we can figure out how to get this done without the grant.  We raise much of our own food.  There are farmers that will not be able to fill the gap caused by increased tariffs and cuts to foreign aid leading that provided their income.  Where will you get your food from if they are not growing it for you?  Michael

Don’t waste your energy.  The things you mention are way too complex for these guys to understand.  They believe that January 6 was a show of love.  They support law enforcement unless they are trying to protect the capitol and congress from rioters.  They believe in democracy as long as the vote goes their way. They think abortion should be illegal until Uncle Johnny rapes their daughter.  They think Ukraine started the war.   They think Trump is a self made man but he got a $13,000,000 loan from his father to buy his first building.  They support tariffs until they have to pay more at the grocery store. Give it time. It will hurt them more than it will hurt me. I got a big tax cut during the first Trump administration but I would much rather pay my taxes and help others than back this regime of terror that will eventually make all of our lives worse.

Chief Justice John Roberts on Wednesday night granted a respite to the Trump administration as it seeks to keep billions of dollars in foreign aid frozen, despite a judge’s order directing the administration to resume payments immediately.

Roberts’ intervention heads off the possibility of administration officials being held in contempt for failing to comply with the order from U.S. District Judge Amir Ali, who imposed a deadline of 11:59 p.m. Wednesday for the federal government to pay nearly $2 billion in unpaid invoices from foreign-aid contractors.

Roberts issued a stay of Ali’s order shortly after acting Solicitor General Sarah Harris filed an emergency application arguing that it was impossible for officials to comply with that urgent deadline. Ali ordered the government to unfreeze the funds in response to lawsuits from aid groups that say they’re being devastated by the administration’s broad cutoff of foreign assistance.

Roberts ordered the aid groups that filed the lawsuits to respond to the government’s application by noon on Friday.

Roberts will likely refer the matter to the full Supreme Court, and his stay is likely to remain in place until the full court acts.

Ali, an appointee of former President Joe Biden, ordered the administration on Tuesday to pay the accumulated bills by the end of the day on Wednesday. The judge acted after finding that the Trump administration ignored earlier orders he issued requiring the State Department to lift a blanket freeze on overseas aid programs.

Rather than take steps to unfreeze that aid, as Ali had directed Feb. 13, the State Department and the U.S. Agency for International Development found new legal rationales to keep it on hold. Ali then gave the administration the midnight Wednesday deadline to send the payments for what officials have estimated is $2 billion-worth of unpaid work completed by aid contractors.

The Trump administration disclosed Wednesday that it is eliminating more than 90% of USAID foreign-aid contracts — and cutting $60 billion in foreign assistance overall.

Peter Marocco, the Trump appointee leading USAID’s day-to-day operations, filed a statement with Ali Tuesday suggesting that it would be impossible to meet his quick deadline and in fact would require “weeks’ of work to restart dismantled payment systems.

“Restarting funding related to terminated or suspended agreements is not as simple as turning on a switch or faucet,” Marocco said. “Rather, the payment systems of USAID and State are complicated and require various steps before payments are authorized to be disbursed by the U.S. Treasury, Department of Health and Human Services, and/or the Department of State, involving multiple agencies.”

Solicitor General Sarah Harris filed the emergency petition with the justices at roughly the same time that a federal appeals court in Washington denied a similar emergency appeal of Ali’s decision. The unanimous three-judge appellate panel noted that temporary restraining orders of the kind Ali issued typically cannot be appealed, and there was no reason to depart from that practice in this case. The ruling left the Supreme Court as the last resort for the Trump administration.

Harris said the administration was prepared to pay any bills for completed work but said the need to conduct a review for waste, fraud and abuse required a lengthier process than the one permitted by Ali’s orders.

“To be very clear, the government is committed to paying legitimate claims for work that was properly completed pursuant to intact obligations and supported by proper documentation,” Harris wrote. “It is attempting to navigate the district court’s evolving orders — and the ensuing, resource-consuming contract-review process.”

Harris said Ali had no authority to intervene in the matter in the first place, suggesting he was impinging on Trump’s authority to direct the nation’s foreign policy.

“The President’s power is at its apex and the power of the judiciary is at its nadir in matters of foreign affairs,” Harris wrote.

The Federal Communication Commission (FCC) has launched an investigation into radio stations backed by leftist billionaire George Soros for broadcasting live locations of undercover Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.

A group backed by Hungarian-born Soros purchased over 200 Audacy radio stations and received foreign investments. The radio stations cover over 40 media markets in the United States, giving the leftist billionaire unprecedented control over communication.

One of those stations, KCBS 740 AM in San Francisco, has come under scrutiny from the FCC for revealing live locations of undercover ICE vehicles and agents that were conducting deportation operations in the San Jose area.

The FCC’s Enforcement Bureau has already sent a formal Letter of Inquiry to the radio station as part of the FCC investigation. The Enforcement Bureau proceeding is inquiring whether the radio station – which is licensed to operate by the FCC – is violating the terms of their FCC license, which requires that they operate in the ‘public interest.

The ICE agents were operating in response to violent gang activity.

On January 26, the host of KCBS Radio Weekend News, revealed over the public airwaves that undercover ICE agents were carrying out an operation on the east side of town and then revealed the specific make, color and model of several unmarked vehicles used in the operation.

FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr, a Trump-appointee, says broadcasting such locations puts agents at risk, which violates the public interest.

Germany knew that the UK was in economic decline before WW 1, so after WW 1 the UK was in a far worse economic state. The 1930's depression further deteriorated the poor economic state. It is very probable that these gold reserves came from Australia following the 1850's gold rush and later from Sth Africa. Spain took gold from its Sth American and Mexico countries it controlled.

Italy was an allied country during WW 1 and the northern part of Italy was a major battle ground between the allies and Germany/Austria.

After WW 1 the US govt and companies invested substantial capital in Italy and American tourism started in Italy because the troops and US command liked Italy and what it offered, great food, weather, friendly people etc. Mussolini was liked by the US govt, he brought order to the country. This bromance between the US and Italy upset Churchill and his govt because they without justification expected that post WW 1 the US would invest in the UK instead of Italy. Churchill hated the Italians. Churchill began a mission to undermine Mussolini, running the theme that he was a dangerous dictator, with the US govt and President. Joe Kennedy was the the US ambassador to the UK and Churchill's conduit to the President. Eventually Churchill's mission using Kennedy succeeded, Kennedy received a multi generation licence and royalty from Churchill for his bidding on behalf of Churchill, for all UK whiskey exported to the US, a fee per case exported. This royalty continues today and is a major income source for the Kennedy family. Without US support in 1940, the UK would have been overrun by Germany.

The US turned against Italy, reluctantly by many US govt people and the military. The Italian economy was doing very well post the depression. An example of this was Italy's motor vehicle manufacture and many industrial developments, including a jet engine research and prototype. Mussolini and his govt were stumped by the US decision to place sanctions on Italy. The US would have no military connection with Italy, no navy bases in the Mediterranean etc. This was a critical strategic mistake by the US. It was the opportunity that Hitler was handed on a plate, he immediately struck a deal with Italy and his ships now had the best Mediterranean ports to launch his progressive war plans, particularly into Nth Africa. The US later realised and regretted that it had made a huge error to accept Churchill's personal vendetta on Italy. Had the US rejected Churchill's plans against Italy, the US would have been able to control Italy, the Mediterranean and Italy would not have fallen under the control of Germany. The Italians always wanted to be with the US, its ally in WW 1.

Fortunately Italy surrendered in September 1943. Churchill wanted to bomb the shit out of Italy, starting from the Nth and backing up from the STH. The US rejected Churchill's plans outright, the US took control of the Italian campaign and prohibited the bombing of all Italian cultural heritage. Churchill was derailed, he would not destroy Italy as he planned. The US knew the value of what Italy had in every possible way, so rightly the US panned and did save Italy from a UK destruction. All of Italy were happy the US saved the country, it was back to WW 1 and past strong relationship. Churchill hated the US for its protection of Italy.

Can anyone imagine the devastation of Italy's 2000 yrs of cultural heritage if Churchill's military plans prevailed????? Think of Venice being destroyed.

The US reclaimed its Italian connections and this has continued to today. Today the US has extensive military presence in Italy. In 1980 at the US base in Sicily the US had a nuclear armaments, ready for engagement. Close to Naples, the US has a huge military base under the mountains. It is on a care and maintenance program that can be activated quickly.

Imagine what could have been had the US kept Italy under it's control instead of allowing Germany to gain control?

The US wrongly allowed itself to follow the UK into Iraq. Churchill created Iraq, as a new country post WW 2. Subsequently we know what has erupted in Iraq. The UK agreed with the Jews after WW 1 to establish Israel around 1922 in the territory that is now Israel, but the UK (Churchill was involved) did not honour what it promised the Jews. The Jews were determined to have their country and lands back because they never gave up their ownership of their lands.

My history teacher, Professor Geoffrey Blainey, said and taught us that we too often fail in our actions because we continually ignore the lessons of history.

Please cite the program's official name, budget, and possibly a link if it is not the one I previously mentioned sponsored by the American Lamb Board.

I think anyone with a moderate level of common sense and zero education in agronomy, botany, and/or marine biology if asked would tell you it is a bad idea to let domesticated livestock have continuous, free range access to unnamed tributaries and larger waterways. I don't think the federal government needs to be handing millions of dollars out to people to tell us what we already know. Moreover, I don't think the federal government should be funding private enterprises' expenses. If this is some type of hardship program as a response to a new regulation to quickly bring everyone in compliance then just pass the regulation and give each affected party no less than 7 years to figure out how to bring themselves into compliance. That way everyone would be operating under the same set of circumstances. The government paying to build all or even a part of your fence, but none of somebody else's fence is the government picking winners and losers and market manipulation at its finest.  However, to me it sounds like some politician, lobbyist, or bureaucrat's "pork project" disguised as "research". Without knowing exactly what program we are talking about its hard to say so I will defer any further discussion on it.

I can't remember if it was this thread or another but I noted that the US agriculture industry is the most regulated and manipulated industry in the land. The USDA has more regulations on the books than any other federal entity. The list is endless. The USDA subsidizes insolvent operations. The USDA subsidizes industrial scale farms owned by millionaires and literal billionaires to not farm their land. Hmmm. IMO The USDA has an image of what the American farm should look like and the small 150 acre or less "family farm" doesn't resemble that image. My guess is most New Deal agriculture programs and legislation had negative, unintended consequences. However, definitely since Earl Butz's leadership tenure the USDA has continuously advanced legislation, programs, and manipulative forces to make small farms uncompetitive. It has created a situation where the entire "private" industry is essentially a government run entity with major control by about 5 or 6 mega corporations. The "prop" handed out to these insolvent operations is treating the symptom. If the USDA truly cared about small operations and a robust agricultural supply chain they would treat the illness.

I wonder why the federal government hasn't set up a US Department of Plumbing. If it did it could start printing and borrowing tons of money to pay plumbers to stay home and not do plumbing work. Additionally, they could create a litany of laws and regulations that allow no more than 10 mega corporations to control the whole industry such that the only way a self employed, sole proprietor can remain solvent is by receiving federal welfare.

I am of the opinion that if the USDA and the government as a whole removed itself from farmer's private business and private industry along with all the laws and regulations it has created since at least 1971, there would be no need for any of the subsidies it hands out. Moreover, small operators wouldn't need subsidies to be competitive, the large industrialized, factory farms wouldn't have taken hold, or both.

I, like you, grow much of my own food. I purchased a small farm of about 30 acres so my family and I could be more independent and not have to rely so heavily the conventional food supply chain. Never the less I'm not worried. Last I checked under the current arrangement of farming, American farmers can produce enough food for 140% of the American population.

Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin announced Thursday an executive order reviving a decades-old program that trains and deputizes state and local law enforcement to question people about their immigration status and detain them for deportation.

The executive order does three things. First, it directs Virginia State Police to set up a task force of law enforcement trained and deputized by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

It also directs the Virginia Department of Corrections to cooperate with ICE, allowing ICE officials to use detention and processing facilities throughout Virginia and to train corrections officers to act as immigration enforcement.

And it directs sheriffs and other law enforcement officials to certify they will cooperate with the above directives.

“This order will allow Virginia State Police and the Department of Corrections to partner with President Trump’s administration on federal immigration enforcement,” Youngkin said. “Dangerous criminal illegal immigrants should not be let back into our communities to assault, rape and murder.

“They should be sent back where they came from.”
