Has anyone ever seen anything like this before? Is it a retrofit, or some option to get away from the axle mount steering gear? The frame on a Superliner 1 gets pretty narrow (weak?) where this box is mounted. Looks like the original Sheppard gear minus the sub-assembly... very interesting.

You’re right , it is very narrow up front, I had 1 Older Super Liner with the box on the axle. I’ve never seen a setup like that, it looks like a Shepherd box, I guess you could change the front axle and mount a plate on the frame to bolt the box to, maybe that is what the brace is for under the frame. I did similar on my H Model, I installed a PS box from a S series IHC , I cut the section of frame from the donor truck and bolted it to my H Model frame and made a brace . I screenshot your Super Liner picture of what I think is the add on brace,, Unsure if it is a aftermarket kit or a homemade.
