with land prices going through the stratosphere here in central New Jersey, all the scrap yards are being sold of for either condom complexes stacked like sardines in a can, or 1,000,000 square foot warehouse buildings.

when you are up to your armpits in alligators,

it is hard to remember you only came in to drain the swamp..

I love how they are considered toxic wastelands until the right guy owns the property. And then it's fine to build houses and an elementary school on

yup. it all boils down to who gets paid off. look at Colonia NJ in 1967 they built a school complex on top of an old commercial sight where radioactive materials were used. claim was the site was clean..

in 1990 students were being taught how to use a Geiger counter. it went nuts and the school was evacuated.

when a radioactive rock was found. on the ground it was covered up.

now 30 years later there are reports of 120 former students of that school having, or or have died of brain cancer.

In 1942, Hooker Chemicals and Plastics Corporation purchased the site of the Love Canal. Between 1942 and 1953 Hooker Chemical disposed of about 22,000 tons of mixed chemical wastes into the Love Canal. Shortly after Hooker ceased use of the site, the land was sold to the Niagara Falls School Board for a price of $1.00. In 1955, the 99th Street Elementary School was constructed on the Love Canal property and opened its doors to students. Subsequent development of the area would see hundreds of families take up residence in the suburban, blue-collar neighborhood of the Love Canal.

During construction they were digging up drums of unknown waste products. I seem to remember they relocated a building because they were hitting so many

A sad state of affairs. Then the warehouses sit vacant for 2 years and they keep building more.Remember all the junkyards on Texas Rd?

they are mostly still there........for now. the only ones closed are Barons and PJ's.

Aberdeen auto salvage is still there, but only open on saturday and by appointment during the week. John has gotten real sick and the guy running the yard for him has a full time weekday job.

the two yards down the other end off Tyler lane are still open, and Midway auto wreckers is still open.

Marlboro auto wreckers yard on spring valley road is still working, as is B&B on 520.

Do any of these yards you are talking about have heavy duty trucks? Looking for one of these.Where are they located at?

the only yards with trucks are Marlboro Auto Wreckers on Tennant Road, and Midway Auto Wreckers on Texas Road in Morvanville NJ.

Marlboro has a truck yard about 1/2 mile from the main yard on Spring Valley road.

Mike Nugent used to have a lot of heavy spec B model stuff in trailers from Gus Sr. I kind of remember seeing some of that stuff at A&A truck parts in Jersey. Maybe Deerfield down in South Jersey. Have you talked to Tony Desandro at Ace auto parts in Bensalem, he might know somebody.

Let me know if you can't find it. I know some places up here that were still running stuff like that in the mines not too long ago

I'm not sure what the Love Canal and a salvage yard have in common. The Hooker Chemicals and others like them around the country are guilty of the contamination for sure. As for our local salvage yard, there will be nuts, bolts and brake shoes etc. turning up for years. Not much different from any junk yard.

You are forgetting about all the fluids spilled, and holes dug to bury anything they needed to get rid of. Going back 30 plus years ago everybody operated like slobs. I can think of a few guys cutting up utility transformers to get the copper and just letting the oil run on the ground. Lead acid batteries got broken, mercury switches got smashed, all kinds of shit went on the ground without a thought
