Ok. I'm back guys. Have updates here. Ordered cam kit from atl Diesal. New cam not refurbished. Complete kit lifters and all 3200. I have green mack service manual and tool for h clips. Heads are at machine shop which only leaves me with more questions. So. Heads check out ok but he said they were thin. He was concerned on proper clamping for when retorqued. I'm not in any position to by Heads so we agreed we would run with them. I didn't have head issues before. I know it's a risk since they have been disturbed but.... yall thoughts? Also no piston movement ( play) down in the jugs but there is cylinder glaze. Can I hone , put new rings and send it. Or do you suggest just changing liners?

Not sure what thin heads means, they are ususally reusable if they pass inspection, did new valve seals get installed? Also, i hope you have the liners held down with bolts and big washers, while you are rotating the engine. Also are you checking the height of the liners? Liner protrusion.... Did you pressure test cooling system with heads on and oil pan off to see if you had any leaking liners?  Forgive me with all my questions, but i have seen what happens when these preliminary steps arent taken..

No. No and haven't rotated motor yet. I took heads off because I wanted them check by machine shop. I have not pulled a piston or rotated motor yet. I'm honestly stuck on what's next. Im.going to change bearings in bottom end but honestly I don't have the money to keep throwing at tools. I can't find inexpensive gauges to check linear protrusion. So at this point I really just want to pull pistons and drop engine hone down the the holes and just rering. I wasn't having any issues prior to so I hope if I don't disturb anything I would be ok. If I'm wrong let me know.

If it were me I'd buy a pistonless in frame kit from PAI you will get everything but new pistons last I checked they were around 1200 dollar it's cheaper than piecing out rings and all the gaskets individually. Get Joey Mack to come check block to see if counter bore needs cut and set liner protrusion. I'm going guess that your liner protrusion will be low I certainly would not put it back together without checking

Problem is I'm doing this outside wete tempatures are not getting passed 50degress. I'm concerned that silicone won't set under liners

I was taught from the begging to put liner hold down bolts in place right after pulling the heads.. I have had good results with that method, however, a weak seal on a liner is not visible, I like to pressure test the cooling system with the pan off to see if I have a leaking liner before hand..

You can also use anaerobic sealant on the liner! I have seen this done and it works as well if not better than silicone! BUT you need to make sure the ledge is clean and dri! If you haven't turned the engine Clamp the liners and pull the slugs! If you don't have to much ridge on the liners just lightly hone them and rering it on the cheap! Liner protrusion is important!  you want no less that 24  up to 30 is acceptable!  from my experience! If you got less than 24 I suggest you pull the liners and shim them! Joey will be able to school you on this he has all the skills and tools to do this!

So does that mean sealant will set in 40 degree weather? Guys I have been around a few builds before in my life. I also went to diesal tech. I understand all the checks and balances that you guys are mentioning. Im bringing my concerns to you guys. I brought linear puller along with some other tools that Joey has mentioned. I have also spoken with him in the phone. My biggest issue is messing with linears in this 30 to 45degree weather. I don't have enough experience with mack linears or sealant to be comfortable with doing it in the cold. If it was a big cam cummins. I wouldn't have any concerns. No sealant involved. I just don't know if sealant would cure.

You know I keep seeing these pistonless liner kits more and more, have complete kits with pistons gotten that expensive?

Are we going to end up like back when I was a kid knurling piston skirts?

Haven't seen that done since high school auto mechanics class, along with knurling valve guides.   terry:MackLogo:
