Never would have thought 20 years ago they'd be what they are now.

20 years ago !!! try 45 + years ago never considered things to come being this way. it was a major change to see a 250hp engine replaced by 300. now 550- 600+ common .

I aquired a T880. Bought it to flip it. It needed a little help here and there. It's a Paccar with an Ultrashift 13.  I drove it around a little , and there;s no debating it's a pretty nice truck. Keep in mind, they make better appointed trucks than this particular one, and even at that it's hard not to like it. Haven't been in a newer Mack, so I can't really say much about them, but that T880 is a pretty nice dump truck. Mine is on Primax and it rides unbelievably good.  I'm all for traditional trucks, but if this is what there is to choose from now ????  I could adjust.

the ultrashift is an ok trans...but no good for trailer work. it has a semiautomatic clutch in it. when you step on the brake it disengages the clutch. stepping on throttle engages the clutch.

so when you are trying to spot a trailer using both brake and throttle it very quickly tears the clutch out of the truck.

my friend had 4 of them.. for 3 years. and put 4 clutches in each before getting rid of them

the allison is a true automatic trans.

when you are up to your armpits in alligators,

it is hard to remember you only came in to drain the swamp..

My first dump truck was an R210 450 Red Diamond 5x3 Heavy Eatons on a Hendrickson, 10:00 x 20 rubber, lever on the floor with linkage and a cable to lock the power divider. I bought it off of a farmer in jersey for 800 and it had a seized up motor, It was old but everything looked like new, Not even a rock dent or a spot of rust on the 14 yard Heil body.

I bought a 450 out of a state truck from Donny and Bobby Metzger when they were in a barn up at Street Rd and 611 in Warrington. Bobby had long hair like a hippy lol. (Donny and Bobby are Coopersburg KW now) I think I gave them 500 for the motor. I put the motor in using the hoist in my grandmothers barn. It cost me as much for tags and insurance as I had into the truck

That thing was such a good reliable truck, nothing ever broke But it was no speed demon lol

It looked just like this one but the body was red

my first ride was a 49 L190 single axle tractor with the 501 red diamond and quad box.

No I guess not.

Hey, what the hell happened to all the new CAT dump trucks I saw when I moved up here. Did they all get cut up for scrap? One of those North Jersey guys had a whole bunch of them

yup. when i got my first paying job they put me in an ols wore out tired B-815 with quad box( cause i knew how to drive it) .three weeks later they sold that truck and put me in a brand new 85DM 800 with 237 and a mud stick trans. i thought i was hot snot, as it was the fastest truck in the yard. then in 88 i got a R model with a 350 4 valve and was in heaven.

When they first started talking about building trucks I was picturing something rugged with like a C15. Then they turned out to be a rebadged Navistar

Actually my first ride was my uncle's WC22 White, Super Mustang, 5 speed with a 2 speed rear. It had a single boom wrecker on it they built in the shop. Dark blue brush paint lol.

I could see that. They'd be less than ideal for blacktop or anything requiring lots of stop and start. In soft ground, they'd be lousy.  I think they do ok if you're on the highway a lot.  Crawl'n around.....not so much.

I think some of their first generation ones had CAT motors in them, maybe a C13 at the least. The majority of them ended up being Navistar junk.

I don't even know what that is.

From sometime in the 60s until the mid 80's Mack offered a clutch that ran in an oil bath. I think it was a 13.5 inch two plate. Different bell and trans bell, seal between the starter drive and starter motor. (Different nose), and the clutch was actuated by an air cylinder. In the cab instead of the regular clutch petal there was a regular treadle valve, just like the one for brakes. When you looked in ,, it looked like you had two brake petals.

Built for very severe service. If you took them apart to replace an engine or something, they'd have hundreds of thousands of miles, and still look brand new

I worked on a few of those when i was a new guy. It think UPS used them and the post office too. I think in MH cab overs.. all i remember was the gaskets for the bell housing and starter, which i think was air start. And i think the oil was dexron 2 tranny fluid..

UPS did run the wet clutch. one customer (while I was at Mack ) did have a F model with wet clutch. took some getting used to. basically a treadle(brake) pedal on the floor. adjusted properly ; light pressure pushed the linkage.

Well I think they stopped making them in 1985, so kids your age have probably never seen one.

Never saw one. Even back closer to that era.  I don't even remember hearing of them.  Really do learn something new every day.

never had the opportunity to run a wet clutch in a truck.... but in farm tractors they made life very pleasurable.
