Do you have a whole home generator?  If not,,  i hear they are cheaper than a P.O.S. Volvo Mack...  Im glas you are doing good.  I just found out today..

No, but Zina is talking about getting one again. The last time was when we were coming back from Florida and layed over in Asheboro because there was a bad ice storm up here and a lot of power outages. We were still in Gladys then, that was about 3 or 4 years ago I think. But even then, it wasn't our nearly as long as it was this time so I think I should get one.

My brother has a Generac, and some people say they're a great unit, but I've heard too many people say they're junk. I started seeing these ads online- even though I hadn't googled generators at all, imagine that- and Briggs and Stratton makes generators, I never knew that, and they have a 7 year warranty. And I saw Kohler ads, Cummins ads, several more I can't remember now. But I think we're going to get something.

Wow, like everything else anymore that's about twice as much as I was thinking it would cost.

the 1800RPM water cooled units are quietest. then the 1800 RPM air cooled units.

Not only the quietest. more or less better quality units all around. If necessary they will run for months on end. A friend of mine ran his whole place on an 1800rpm lister 6500 watt that started out life as a light tower. He ran it for 2 years straight only shutting down for maintenance.

These JC ONANS are great too, run them on propane because you can store it forever. I had one on natural gas run a whole police district in Philly for 3 months when a primary fuse blew on the pole and nobody really noticed until the Onan shut down for low oil. Picture is of a Onan 12.5 JC , But the JC series comes in a couple sizes I think a 6.5 is the smallest and something like 15 is the largest. And the KW rating is real, not  like these 3600 rpm units with their BS ratings

my 17.5KW is a RDJF, the king of the Onan diesels.

it came from North Bergen DPW. it was the backup power plant for the high pressure sewer pump .

never used for anything but run time once a month for 5 minutes a month, for 40 years.

power went out ONCE in the 40 years it was in service, and it ran for 2 hours.  the other 4 hours were put on it by the guy i got it from. he bought it from the town to use in an automotive shop he was starting.  was there 6 months when the building owner sold it and the new owner kicked him out.

the new building he found already had a generator, so he no longer needed this one

when you are up to your armpits in alligators,

it is hard to remember you only came in to drain the swamp..

I don’t think he’s looking for anything that big but it probably would be a good idea. I like the Jen set idea I used to pull them in containers  but me as well. I’ll be looking for something a lot smaller I would also like something that is not that loud as most of them we’ve been planning on buying one for years still haven’t done anything about it. I’d really like to have that Generac set up but I heard it’s about 22,000 altogether with installation I don’t wanna go that high for something that doesn’t really happen much around here.

One really needs to consider how often their power actually goes out before dropping $10,000+ on a whole house automatic stand by generator. Seems like a ludicrous amount of money to spend for an extended outage once every two years or so. Besides unless you are on utility supplied natural gas ("street gas"), your longevity is only as good as your fuel storage. What amount of propane or gasoline storage would you need for 17 days of continuous running at your typical electrical usage? Unless you have a life critical medical appliance that needs continuous power I think the whole house generators are kind of silly to own and maintain. I think the most practical solution would be to have a 3.5 or 5kW portable generator with 240V output and a 240V extension cord made up with two male ends. Backfeed your panel through a dedicated 240V outlet near the panel. This would be sufficient to run your furnace blower, refrigerator/freezer, or laundry a few times a day or whenever needed. Not considering the cost of the generator itself, the modifications needed to your main panel in order to do this are probably somewhere around $200 depending on your specific setup.

There is no reason to use a suicide cord when interlocks for your breaker panel are cheap. They are only like 50 bucks

That's kinda what I was thinking. Actually, that's exactly what I was thinking 🤔

Here is what a suicide cord did to John Griffin's (Big Time Brockway collector from Philly) Daughter in law and her mother during Sandy. BTW some of the members here knew John

Two women died in an overnight electrical fire in Bucks County that authorities say appears to have been storm-related.

Officials say it happened early Wednesday morning at a home on Marion Avenue and Street Road in Bensalem. Two women were inside the house when the fire broke out.

Jeff Moran, a spokesman for the Philadelphia medical examiner's office, identified the victims as 64-year-old Kathryn Griffin and 90-year-old Helen Markert.

He said they were both pronounced dead at Aria Health-Torresdale in Philadelphia, where they were taken following the 3 a.m. Wednesday blaze.

Three volunteer firefighters were reported injured battling the flames, which were first spotted by a passer-by in the Bucks County community.

Im with 67RModel, and J.C. and myself. I have a $1,200.00  10,000 watt. portable connected professionaly to my house, gas and propane powered. It runs my whole house minus the A.C. Electric start for my Wife..

Flipping a main breaker is free... I personally think impossible to forget how and/or improperly execute the sequence of back feeding your main panel without a transfer switch or interlock contraption. This Isn't Quantum Physics. So long as the "suicide cord" is sized for the max amps the generator can provide or better yet sized for 15% more amps than the 240V double pole breaker your backfeeding through there is nothing to worry about IMO.

My cord is short and its 8AWG..one size larger than needed for 30 amps. 12 years of service with no issues... And yes, i know how to manually transfer the power..
