I recently started a new job driving.a 2007 Mack Granite tractor pulling a end dump. 73k one way empty on the way back. This thing is getting horrible fuel economy. I'm getting on average, about 3MPG daily. The truck is a gutless wonder, and because of that, i'm full throttle, most of the day just trying to obtain and maintain 40mph speed limits. The lightning bolt is illuminated on the dash and people are telling me it's because the fuel gauge isn't working. Not sure.If that's the reason so i'm wondering Is there any simply way to read the code?  Or am I looking at the Vin? Can you tell me what engine/hp rate it is.

I feel sorry for anybody that owns  these junks. The other trucks in the Fleet seem to suffer from the same poor mpg and no power.  An old R model would run circles around this p.o.s

When the Fault light us on, turn the cruise control off, and press the set button down for a couple seconds and count the flashes.. they will be in pairs.  IE: 3-2.. have a pen and paper handy

Yup! Trett ! be happy your just driving and not owning! The mileage and power are the trade mark!

AMI is one of two engines that could be under the hood of an 07. Well possibly 3 technically. I think maybe the MP7 was out in 07 but that’s beside the point. In the early 2000s Mack offered ASET engines. “Application Specific Engine Technology” AMIs were for vocational applications and the AC version was for highway stuff. The main difference between the two was how they cooled or managed the EGR. AMIs seemed to be the less problematic of the two but yea real gutless wonders and laughable low end torque

2004-2006. 2007 introduced the MP..  build dates always seem to be askew..  the gutless part is the damn B.S. program in the E.E.C.M.  I dont like it either .  Its hard to beat an E-7 400 mechanical with a good gearbox.. I would take one every day over any ASET..

I got better mileage from my EN707 gasoline powered LF wrecker.

Hell you'd probably do better with a Hall Scott 1091

Im not really going to call it a nad engine.  Its just been de-tuned in my opinion..  One of my customers has an '04. I kept it up for several years. Its a tri axle dump ith a 310 M trans.  It would pull good just slow..  its mot like i was on the throttle and it was not accelerating..  Please dont think im dissrespecting your truck. You still have a strong chassis built for work..

Thanks for confirming I have one of Macks Worst Engines LOL.  From the sounds of what your all telling me.  its doing perfectly fine for what it is. SAD!

You pretty much got to drive in the top of the tack to get anything out of it stock! as joey stated its not a bad engine the reliability is there ! It lacks the gidy up go! due to the exhaust system and the cam!

Pretty much what those guys said.   Not too long ago I upset a guy sharing my opinion of them (the AMI engine)  They were not Mack's best idea.

Yeah, you're a total dick

Thats how this truck drives. It has nothing down below 1350 and not alot after 1900. To drive this thing I try to rev it out just past 2000 rpm because with this 10 speed, when I make my up shift the next gear goes in at 1350-1400 and it will be in its "power" band. It just struggles to accelarate.

I did 5 loads in 10 hrs 230 miles total the other day and it burned 82 gallons of fuel. thats 2.8 MPG. horrible!!!

Exactly the way I remember them running. First time I drove one back in the day I was thinking it would run like a 300 Maxidyne. I shifted "early" and thought the thing was going to stall. IMO they have terrible performance below 1400 rpm for what their intended purpose is. Seems to me there was "nothing there" until the turbo really started doing something which was around 1400. As I remember the AMIs were much less problematic than the AC version, and all things considered were actually a pretty solid early emissions engine. They just do not have the same performance characteristics Mack had been noted for up to that point. The fuel consumption seems pretty high but I never really paid attention to that when I drove them as it was a slip seat deal..

Read this thread in its entirety.  It explains what you are driving.

What engine codes do you have? As Joey said, cruise off, press the accel/decel rocker down and then count the 2 digit code.  Repeat this until you have pulled all codes out.  (All codes are pulled when it starts repeating itself). You could have some legitimate issues.  Cracked charge air cooler, busted springs on EUP fuel injection pumps, etc.  Also what is the engine model?  AI-300? AI-350? AMI-300?  You don't have the worst engine, the AC-series is the worst.  The Granite has an AI-series engine.  You can delete the EGR on the AI engines. AC you're F'd.  The thread I posted discusses the modifications to delete the AI's EGR.

The AMI engines are Maxidyne fuel mapped AI engines.  Wide powerband. If yours is gutless below 1300 rpms then chances are you don't have an AMI.  If this were my truck the first thing I would do is put a pyrometer and a boost gauge on. Biggest indicators of performance health on your truck.  If EGR is too hot and boost is low then you have air intake system issues.
