They bought on price.

How much price difference could there be between a ENDT673C and a quad box compared to a Maxidyne and a 6 speed? The engine is more or less the same except for fuel settings and turbo

I had a fleet that bought 20 DMs with Thermodynes and Fuller 13-speeds. I pleaded with them to pay up for the indestructible Maxidyne/Maxitorque drivetrain. They had Internationals with that small diesel and Fullers.......one couldn't convince them that Mack had an altogether different and game-changing powertrain.

It is more easy to sell an O/O on something new and different than a fleet. They want all the same, no changes. A fleet full of half one way and half another, along with slip-seating is a recipe for an unhappy customer.

Maxidynes were hardly new in 1981, and what they were replacing was a mismatched bunch of everything. It was George Harms Construction and they went from pretty much nothing. to a whole yard full of brand new equipment when they Got the contract for the Black Bridge, and a big contract to replace power structures along the railroad. He seriously went from a guy in a pickup and a flannel shirt, to a guy with a private helicopter in the space of a couple years

I was also thinking the same thing after all that work unless you can find a buyer for it that will pay you what you got into it. You’re kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place. I’ve never heard of anybody burning out a transmission, but I got that from a Mack truck salesman years and years ago he said they really weren’t made to take a lot of torque. Maybe just run it a while and see how she performs kind of takes  all the charm and romance out of it if you put in something with a one stick good luck whatever you decide Larry.

Shock load can kill anything. If you are not an idiot, and I know you're not, then you aren't going to twist a shaft with a little more engine.

Your money, your choice, but I wouldn't loose a minute of thought about using that engine with that transmission.

One place I worked, one driver broke the shift handle off the 1/2" rod, now he could break an anvil with a rubber hammer.

Your not pulling hard 10 or more hours a day, I wouldn't worry too much, You can run SAE 50 that handles heat better than GL.

didnt some of the early v8s use the quad box transmissions?

I think the B81s had that set up

YES!!! A lot of the Ford 534's and IH 547's had 5X3 tranny set ups.. especially with tandem drives. I drove an IH 220 with the 450 BD inline 6 engine that had a 5X3.

And how many souped up 3406, Big Cams and KT19's were running around pulling freight when the biggest transmissions were 1200 ft/Lbs?

Rear axles that were geared fast so the high power engines could reach triple digits and still held together with all that torque?

That engine was never coupled to a 5 speed from Mack. It's not a Maxidyne high torque rise engine. It was always coupled to something 9 or more speeds. If your triplex is a 2 inch input shaft and a dual disk clutch I wouldn't worry about it

Turn that aux transmission around and you had an easy triple digit truck if you had the power. Just don't let it idle with the main in gear and the aux in neutral. They didn't oil

Only if it puts the AUX in Lo-lo, otherwise it doesn't change much. If he did put in Lo-lo with it turned around I wouldn't bet on any part of the driveline staying together.

I'm remembering that 300's and 300 Plus had larger air cleaners than the 237's, any plan for that yet?

Kevin in near Oneonta NY, He is mainly Mack, his shop is called All Mack. But I've seen some nice Brockway cabs come out of his shop years ago...

Ha ha, very well put Larry got all that power now who the hell wants to ride around feathering like gas pedal your might as well just go back to the 180

The biggest problem with a mack single countershaft trans with higher horse engines is do not lug it, keep the rpm’s in higher power band and you’ll be fine, terry:MackLogo:

Back in the seventy's I used to take care of a fleet of R's and F models 237 and 300's all with the 5 speeds I can't remember any of the truck drivers tearing up the trans or the rears.. Engines I did one a month and you had to pay attention when running the valves some were dynatards we ran about 27 or 29 Macks and some ran the coast and Canida runs. My old Autocar had a twin stick 4x4 and 262 Cummins. I ran flatbeds, equipment trailers, vans with the 5 speeds not my favorite trans I like more gears. I had the chance to give the 3408 in a Pete a tryout I liked that engine my all-time favorite was the 1693 I could really get some power out of that engine on the dyno.
