I know they suffered from the ho low range syncronizer. they often grinded between range changes. Not macks best transmission but when they were working right they were not all that bad for a road truck.

as far as value. they are not a popular option by people looking to swap in a diffrent transmission.

The most probably the synchro clutch got worn out. It gets bad together with Hi mating gear. In this case you can't go in Hi but can in Low. Other common issue is worn sliding clutches which shift gears in the main box. Their teeth are square at the ends when they're new and get round when worn. You're difficult to catch the moment to shift with that. The condition of sliding clutches can be observed if you remove the main box top cover which is very easy deal. The synchro issue in the compound box needs taking apart to investigate if the memory serves well.

The good thing is the tranny on the ground. The 4th/5th sliding may be worn like Vlad said, it can be replaced easily through the front without taking the tranny apart, and stand it ,,, yoke facing up,,,,, and the synchro job can be done in short time.. no special tools needed for these repairs, just good snap ring plyers.
