Hi all! The starter on my departments truck seems to be dead. I think someone who didn't now what they were doing tried to start it, and cranked it to death.

The truck is a 1949 Type 45, The engine is a Continental ENF-330

The starter is a Delco-Remy 1107456. (6V positive ground)

I have not had any luck locating a replacement off the shelf so far. If anyone has resources for a replacement or rebuild components I would appreciate any leads.

Is it a direct drive delco or a gear reduction delco?

Parts for the direct drives are easy to find, even N.O.S. but also re-pop.

Gear reduction has the motor body offset from the drive section.

Most direct drives can be easily rebuilt.

Gear reduction can also be rebuilt if the armature and commutator are repairable.

I have bought new armatures for my direct drive, but am unable to find any for my gear reduction unit.

It is a direct drive. see pictures attached. It seems like starters or parts should be available considering how generic these things seem to be, I'm probably just searching incorrectly or don't know what to look for. pics attached.

Did you take the band off the back and look at the brushes and commutator? What is it doing, not spinning at all? Did you try testing it with jumper cables? Pos and neg ground are the same. 12 volts with jumper cables won't hurt it for a test

Looks like the ones on my 269's.

everything should be available for that starter.

They do require lube on the rear bushing.

I can also point you to a modern 12 volt if that is the way you are headed.

Yes I have tested it with jumper cables, and I have opened the inspection cover. I also disassembled the entire unit, cleaned commutator and inspected brushes. The commutator is worn but otherwise ok. brushes ok. shaft spins freely by hand. When power is applied it draws some power but does not turn. My assumption is that one of the coils is burned out.

staying with 6V for now, the truck is pretty original. If you can point me to a vendor that sells parts I would greatly appreciate it! I'm having trouble locating it.

I've bought my stuff off ebay, I have part numbers for mine, but no way to look up all Delco numbers.

That said, I am almost certain that the armature, field windings, and bushes would be the same.

Thanks all! I found a shop in San Francisco that specializes in rebuilding old starters. I'm going to look into that during business hours, as well as the DIY option with parts you all have recommended! I love this forum
