Probably the last time I had a "real" milkshake was at the Cumberland Restaurant, in Cumberland, VA. where I grew up. That's probably been more than 50 years ago now.

Excellent Rich, thanks for that. I was very surprised when you told me Merritt gas stations were gone.

I’ve mentioned I grew up in Peabody and we only had one supermarket a first national I think it’s been too many years, but as far as I know, the town has never built another one bunch of corner stores

Sounds like a great place to live to me...Growing up here in Drogheda city we had only one supermarket and loads of small shops selling anything and everything. Now we have 6 supermarket and very few small shops. The staff in the small shops knew all about what they were selling but now you'd be lucky to get a grunt outta the supermarket staff.....the times they are a'changein' to quote a famous singer.....

Well, we had one home improvement center there pretty good size for the time  much bigger than a hardware store. We used to buy everything there now it’s completely gone. The building is not even there anymore. It’s a strip mall. And yes, it was a great place to grow up never in a trouble there at all the town was really quiet. Our newspaper police lottery section really never had anything in there except stupid shit like somebody kicked over Mrs. Smith birdbath dumb stuff like that never any crime at all. The cops used to sit in a small park and read  the newspaper.

I think I’ve made the comment before I grew up in the  most boring town in the United States

Bob, I was the same.. Grew up in Brooktondale NY about 10 miles southeast of Ithaca. 1 general store buy anything, 2 room school house, volunteer fire station with 2 trucks and 2 churches.. PLUS we still had crank phones until 1964!!!!!!

Wow, that’s amazing. Ithaca even today has not got a whole lot there homer even smaller. I was very impressed with the entire area. That was the smallest airport I’ve ever seen. As far as Crank  phones, I don’t think I have ever seen one in person only on TV.

I haven’t been there in years, but I thought the fire station was right there someplace.. United auto parts was in there somewhere .. I  used to work. There.. was right in there someplace. Also, I think it was a little further down past the City Hall compared to some other towns it was a pretty small town Square. Super subs are used to go there all the time that was also gone last time I went through there.

We were talking about letters and phone numbers. I’m sure you’re remember those days as well. Ours was Jefferson five in 1964

Our crank phone number was 28Y22.. Line 28 The Y or F indicted the the length of the first ring.. our was 2 shorts and 2 longs.. The fire house was 4 longs and the telephone operator plugged into all the lines and alerted everybody to a fire..
