I’ve checked the oil level and it was low so topped it up. I’ve greased everything up all ujs and king pins. Is it worth dropping the oil out of the steering box and draining the system and put all fresh oil in or what do people recommend to do ? I dont know what type it is, but some older trucks i worked on had belt driven pumps with a filter in the resevoir. Those break down internally and will restrict flow in a handful of ways.. if the lines are hard as steel you may just want to build new lines.. Joey I was talking to Nathen earlier and told him I read on BMT somewhere the power steering on these use engine oil not hyd fluid.Can you confirm is this correct?? Really all oil is hydraulic fluid, really all fluids.. i have zero knowledge on trucks outside the States.. my guess is the pump construction determined the oil grade.. of course i have seen systems filled with the wrong oil or its mixed, and it still worked.. theres a couple guys here that can quote the book on this.. JoeH Posted 3 hours ago Share Posted 3 hours ago Being tied into the backside of the compressor, if you blow the seals on your power steering pump and now have power steering fluid pumping into your engine, I think you'd prefer it to be 15w40 instead of ATF. Your car's power steering system is entirely disconnected from your engine apart from brackets and belts, so they'll use what they want. Imagine the warranty claim if you blew your engine and Mack found it contaminated with power steering or fluid ATF that you had in there instead of 15w40. A flow variable pump that is stuck in low will make steering heavy. Thinking more about it, I haven't seen a 3 line on a Sheppard box, but that doesn't mean it was never done.
