I have a 01 CL713 E7460 with a Maxitorque 18sp and air ride quad axle dump truck which has been extremely reliable and will probably keep it with they still made them. But I'm leaning towards a new or newer Granite MP8 505 13spMdrive and the Mride suspension. I just read alot of negative stuff about these newer trucks I can't afford to have it at the shop all the time. What are you guys seeing for reliability on these new trucks I know it's a loaded question. Also it's only local hauling so not big miles a year about 50k

I love the truck I have.  Just parts are getting harder to find and it is getting older, so it needs a little more maintenance . I would love to be able to buy a brand new CL. I am with you guys, though. I feel like I could put a new box on it and do quite a bit of maintenance for less than a newer truck. And still have a really nice truck. Was just curious on the new engine and tranny combos

At some point these 90s and early 2000s will become obsolete either through parts availability or attrition. In the 90s there were probably some trucks from the 60s still on the road. Now there are probably none of those left. I suspect the same will happen with these E7 and ETech trucks. The question is how old are you and how much longer are you going to run? If its more than probably 15 years then its probably worth it to buy new. In 10 or 15 years if your Granite needs an engine one will be available. I have no ownership experience (just some driving) with an MP8 / Mdrive. But based on what I have read, seen, and heard I would not purchase an Mdrive transmission. I would opt for an Allison RDS instead. More money for sure but bulletproof. The Mdrives seem to be more problematic than the engines. And they are delicate little single countershaft units. Sure there is a lot of torque limiting safeties and nannies but in my eyes it doesn't have good bones like the MP8 engine does. As Joey said. The MP8 is good but is handicapped by the emissions junk. But then again all new engines are. Buy the new one, keep the CH as backup, and don't look back.

As far as replacement engines a few years from now..... I may have the answer. I may be receiving some core engines to rebuild.. Just waiting for my Buddy to get back to me..  👍

The mDrive is a problematic setup in general. Brand new trucks have come in with burnt clutches, and like 67RModel said, they don't seem to hold up to the abuse a dump truck sees. The few dumps I've seen with mDrives ended up having a lot of transmission issues throughout their life. They're extremely fickle with their air supply, so you HAVE to be on top of your air dryer maintenance and draining tanks. If hardly ANY water gets into that control housing, you stand a high chance of paying for a brand new transmission with control housing. I can't recommend those transmissions to anyone who isn't a massive fleet with near-endless money.

I'm not too impressed with the engines either. The pre-common rail engines weren't too bad, but we've seen a lot of injector failures with the new common rail engines, along with camshafts deleting their own lobes. Hope no one needs one of those camshafts, because they're now made out of unobtanium; more than 200 VOR orders ahead of ours! Nobody makes a good product anymore.

I'm with Joey ! If I were to own a truck The one you have is it! You got a good unit there! Standup oil change ! Whats not to like!

Boy, they really were. Oil change. fuel filters . All on your feet. I don't ever remember changing a fuel filter on my MPs without wearing it.

Yup Heizy they can't leave shit alone there's always a better way ! 🙄 That push together  Cam  idea was an accident going some where to happen! And as I have said before that dollarstore fuel system  should have never happened ! They needed to have put a proper bosch HI system on the engine it would be almost bullet proof ! they needed to have redesigned the head totally and fix it properly ! They just add insult to injury it seems! 😡

I hated the fuel filter sensor plug to dam hard to line up! the whole filter set up is a dogs breakfast just like the fuel system its all relative! 😢

Cut'n that moisture sensor off doesn't hurt a thing. By the time the plug part on the engine harness is green, the rest of the harness is shot anyway.  I worked on a a Volvo once  ( I can't believe I fessed up to that in print )  It had Baldwin filters on it. Someone had that plug stuffed in the front bumper as the Baldwin replacement was just your typical spin on with only a little drain cock on it and no provisions for the bowl. I did try those filters on an MP7. went right on and had a fuel pressure fault until they came off the next day. Nothing about the water in fuel though.

Baldwin replacement

I've never really used Baldwin, so no personal experience. But I know a lot of guys that won't run Baldwin filters. Personally I always try to run factory filters. Probably because I grew up looking at that tag on the Mack filter bases that said "Warranty Void" lol

Those trucks did not like the Baldwins. For the price, I tried them. I'm with you on the manufacturer filters. Even knowing they're made by whoever as time goes on.

Donaldson is are second line they seem fine! Little cheeper than the Mack stuff!

I can remember going through lots of fuel filters. Back in the day before red fuel was a thing we had a guy that did oil tank removal and cleaning on an industrial scale.

(I'll bet you know where this is going lol)

He had an old Transtar with the right headlight panel and part of the bumper torn off and a bunch of old tank trailers (One without baffles, but that's another story) and he had bible passages painted on all his stuff. Well when he got a load that was kind of clean looking, he'd sell it to some guys I knew who had bulk tanks at their yard for next to nothing. But damn the algae it spread. I found out about Kathon FP .005 from my dad who worked developing it and dosed the tanks. It killed it, but the dead algae was still in the fuel. I built a bypass filtering setup and it helped some, but everybody was still going through lots of filters. Everybody kept buying it though while it lasted. Changing filters like every week or two was cheaper than buying fuel at the pump.
