Any method that doesn't grind is fine. Shifting without any clutch slip can be hard on the splines and damper spring in the disk.

when teaching, I get the student to slip the stick into neutral with two fingers then clutch into the next gear. Gets them to understand the process.

A lot depends on the ratio jump between gears on what method works best.

In my opinion, too many put too much stock in being able to shift without using the clutch. More of a "show-off" thing than any real reason to do so.

Mostly I didn't but it depends, I put much more stock in someone who can shift smoothly and without shock or grind then if they use the clutch.

Seen a lot of so called driver shift without and grind or shock load the drivetrain, then I have drivers who used the clutch poorly.

Pulling heavy on a large hill, speed and smoothness can be the difference between making the shift or coming to a halt or worse, driveshaft on the ground. 170k can be very unforgiving.

I went on a service call once where a guy was pulling a load of logs up a grade hit some ice then some traction and popped all three ujoints! Drive shafts on the ground as well as the steady bearing!  As fortune had it there was a slidder at the top of the hill I ended up pulling it up the hill to avoid having the same issue same day!  Shock load can be catastrophic!

as with every day life moments' use the clutch /don't use  ALL depends on the moment at hand. you have a quad or you have a 5 speed;;;; you have 50k or you have 175K on; life's challenges differed moment to moment.  after many trials; I could take a duplex or tri and shift with one hand ; ALL depended on the MOMENT.!!

I can tell you first hand, the Autocar is an extremely well engineered truck. I've been all over it.

The Autocar is the truck that I would buy.

I have very little experience on their quality, but their parts are EXPENSIVE. And hard to look up. We're not an actual Autocar dealer, but I've had to order parts for them frequently and man, is that website frustrating! Really slow, I mean REALLY slow!

I wonder why Acar is not selling more tractors. Are they to heavy?

They are but they are only making DC64 model day cabs with x12 and Allison automatics. I was taking to a rep at the plant yesterday. Someone is supposed to call me back that can tell me more. They are specializing in built to order trucks, but he says they are just starting to have inventory on the ground
