A friend was watching an old Mad Max movie and asked me about the R model that they used in that movie. Any of you guys down under know what happened to that truck? Is it in someone's collection or perhaps it now resides in a museum somewhere in Oz? It would be nice to know.

Best regards,

John

I have posted some photos from the movie in one of my albums showing the truck in action. I'll post a few more from the end of the movie where the truck is laying on its side with the tri-axle tanker behind it.

Regards,

John

Hi John, I think judging by what happened to the truck at the end of the movie that it was a wreck, and probably sold off as parts and srap. I guess thats what happened to the Peterbilt in 'DUEL' aswell. regards Jeff.

clicky.... Probly went back to the wreckers. There were 2 of em.

trucking life did a story on the driver ages ago, i dont think there was two of them, as Mel was going to drive it, but he couldnt even reverse his mini! so the truck driver who was bringing in there stuff got the job. it had a twin stick box in it.

YA look real close when the do an inside shot of the cab w/ the blue healer in the cab ya can JUST make out the 2 stick 6 spd

I know ive said this before but ive always wanted to drive an "Aussie" Bulldog but be my luck id go to swap gears in the 2 stick & open the drivers door insted. ;):loldude:

I Guess Mel would trip out to see that R model BACK UP in 5th gear then . ;)

Sounded like a 237 or a 285 when the air starter kicked the Bulldog over

Any idea on where to find the specs of this R model ?

later yall

Im not a big Mad Max fan but thats just me so I dunno much about the movies Cundalini is still looking for his hand the old Falcon was a cool looking gadget and the Mad Max off road runner is cooler I reckon

Mad Max 3 I have never been able to watch and I havent even bothered trying watch the latest offering

The best R model was in the first movie with the folder on the back

Hi Paul,

As you can guess Dennis couldn't remember the engines 36 years later all he could remember was they where both turbo 6's. To cut a long story short in the last 6 months I secured an rare behind the scenes, under bonnet photo of the hero truck taken from the left hand side. I will post it when I work out how too. I'm no mack expert but Its defiantly not a cool power. I think possibly a ENDT673 however still can't work out why it has twin cleaners. For many years I believe it was a coolpower also but from my research I date the trucks 1970-1971 which puts them before coolpower come to Aus approx 1974. I have just sent an email to the family business who originally owned the hero truck and hoping to hear from them soon.

Cheers

I saw the remaining Mad Max Mack R model was on display at a hot rod car show at the Melbourne Exhibition building late last year or earlier this year.

I did not take any photos, but I recall that it is black colour and is pretty rough but runs and was complete.

I will do some research ans see if I can find information and a picture, even track down the owner.

Hey mate sorry to burst any bubbles but that was one of the three replicas that is around. You would have noticed it was a wide cab with wrap around dash. I know the truck you are talking about! The original mad max ones were narrow cabs with flintstone dashes.

Very rare photo of the two trucks together, taken by a broken hill local. The truck on the left is the double. I can tell this by the slightly different front hub. Both trucks have the early greased hubs however on the hero truck also has slightly protruding dust caps/shields. All stationary scenes in the movie where filmed using the hero truck.

Cheers

Those with a keen eye will also notice the double has front mud flaps the hero dose not (not that you can see where they would be with the guy standing in the way).

You can also see the road rash on the bullbar of the hero truck near the arm of the guy in the green jacket this was from when it t-boned the bat car (red falcon)

The Truckin Life article from a few years ago had that the driver brought up two of them. One was a two valve 676 and they were both Quadraplexes. He had to lay on the floor as tghere was no time to teach Mel.

That oil filter would tell someone smarter than the newest it could be dunno wont be any newer 71 or 72 as Mack had spin filters with extended service interval around that time

Back axles if you can see the hubs should also give some hints as to how big the truck is , I cant see no turbo so if it 34 ass end it may have been a Power Pup, Mack turbos on these motors sort of sat forward of the oil filter if its non turbo I think it would be only around 150 hp maybe 160 at the most

A whole lot of guessing going on from me

Sorry Im not gunna be of much help here

Hey rob, Thankyou for your reply. Unfortunately I have never read the artical in trucking life so can only go from what Dennis tells me on the phone, he can't remember exact power plants but said they where apparently both turbo 6's. I'm waiting to hear back from Ralph Clark and the original owner from country NSW's. Transmission in the hero truck was a quadruplex defiantly and Denise said the double was a single stick 10 speed with the spliter on top. They actually drove up 3 trucks from Sydney, Dennis drove two and Ralph drove the other. The first two trucks where on loan from Mack trucks, they where suppose to be used for transporting gear around and bring many of the vehicles up from Sydney. The borrowed trucks where the green r model (that would be later the double truck) and a green flintstone. Dennis and Ralph drove these up from Sydney together and then They flew back to Sydney to bring up the finished hero truck and tanker. On returning it was discovered the art department had gone to town on the borrowed mack. Even after Ralph and Dennis's grave concern over its new identity and the fact that it was borrowed the production department didn't really care. Apparently Ralph had a very interesting time when it was returned to Mack trucks lol.

Here is a photo of the double mack with 10 speed gearbox.

Hi Paul I will see if I have any rear axle shots in my collection, would the turbo be on the right side or left? I presumed it would be on the right?

Cheers

Turbo is on the right side.  Below are a couple of the Mack R models that would have been available in the time period of the small cab.

Mack R609 is an END 711 (non turbo) 211 HP Thermodyne, TRD 722 10 spd duplex transmission, triplex or Quad box.

Mack R607 END673P (non turbo) 187 HP Thermodyne, TRD 10 spd duplex trans or optional Quad box.

Mack R611 ENDT673 turbo 225 HP Thermodyne, TRD 722 10 spd duplex trans or Quad box.

Mack R685 ENDT675 turbo 237 HP Maxidyne, 5 or 6 spd Maxitorque trans.
