I have a old r-600 truck, It originaly had a mack 6 cylinder, I was wondering how much work is it to change to a cummins engine? I just happen to have a cummins 270 laying around and thought I could wring the last bit of life out of both the truck and the engine. Thanks

Measure from the end of the flywheel housing to the radiator core, to get an idea of how much room you have. Then measure the Cummins from flywheel housing to fan. It might be possible to move the radiator forward a couple of inches or the trans back 3 or 4 inches. Having room for it only matters when you consider how bad you want to do it. Possibilities are unlimited, for a creative mind.

I would think the engine would hit the firewall on a R700.

Naw, there is a couple of inches available back there but it is tight all the same.

well that explains it. I figured it would be difficult, I hate to put the r-600 out to pasture.. I will figure something out.

Are you giving up this easy? Say it ain't so. Go to the video store and rent Maj. Payne. Listen to the part about the little engine that could.

I liked the kitchen sink idea for a doghouse on the car hauler project. Pretty much ready made for that application. Going with a Cummins in a 600 series truck is going to be tight inside the cab and I think the shift levers would need to be relocated to the rear more. Can't see how that would be comfortable to shift.

I'd prolly opt for a 673 as you most likely don't need to go noplace fast anyway in a dump truck. Especially if used for site duty, or short runs primarily.
